The Lived Experience of Comfort of the Hospitalized Low-Income Elderly Women Living Alone

Abstract
Introduction: This research aims to understand the meaning and essence of comfort experience of hospitalized low-income elderly women living alone. This study is Giorgi¡¯s phenomenological research method and exploring the essence of phenomenon appears through the researcher¡¯s scientific perspectives.

Method: The method of inquiry included: Sense of the whole: Breaking the meaning unit: Transformed meaning unit: synthesis of structure. The participants for this study were 5 elderly women living alone in municipal hospital who were in the age 65 over. Data for the exploration of the meanings of their ¡¯comfort of hospitalized¡¯ experience were collected by in-depth interview and observation from December, 2005 to May, 2006. Collected information was analyzed through phenomenological method procedure of Giorgi(2003, 2004).

Results: As a result 5 constituents and 12 sub-constituents, I scrutinized the relationships they made and synthesised the structure of meanings of comfort in chronical order, and realized that the essence of comfort the low-income elderly women living alone experienced. It was ¡¯to alleviate the embodied mind pains thanks to the treatment of medical staff and the presence of patients allied to them, and then regain their life forces.¡¯

Conclusion: The results presents new nursing perspective based on deeper understanding on comfort experienced by the low-income elderly women living alone.
